Photography Evaluation

Unit 57: Photography & Photographic practise

How did you decide on your topic and how do your images interpret this topic?
When I got given the list of chosen topics I found that love was an interesting topic that could be interoperated by anyone by anything that they felt fitted the title. In my images I wanted to spell out the word love by using different objects as I felt this would be creative and also not be the typical love photo. As I wanted to incorporate what I found love was I decided for the letter V, I used a pair of my own high heels and I think it made a great personal touch to the word.
How did you photograph your subject, considerations to light and location?
For the background I decided to use my bedroom carpet as its light and beige and has a great texture look to it. I decided to place all of the objects on the floor and to make them more interesting I moved all of the objects from left to right and up to down. As the light of my bedroom comes in behind the objects I positioned them so the light would shine off of them and create a shadow around them to make the outlines stand out more.

Research, Planning and Considerations?
Before I decided to come up with the idea of using objects I decided to come up with some ideas that I could photograph that would represent love:
·      Photo’s of couples passing by in a busy town
·      Family photos- mum, dad, children
·      Objects such as shoes, cars, and other popular objects

To help me decide what photo I wanted to recreate I decided to research other peoples love photos and I came across some images that people had got letters and then other objects to create the word ‘love’. I think this was a very good idea as you could chose what objects you placed to create the word, my initial ideas were to place objects such as shoes, chocolate and also nail varnishes to create the letterings.

How did you edit your photos and why did you edit them as you chose to or didn’t do?
I edited my photos by using Adobe Photoshop, as I wanted to change the colour scale for all of my images. For each of the different directions that the word love was places I changed the overall colour such as clicking on the adjustments tool and clicking black and white to drain the entire colour out of the image. For other images I used to adjustment tool again and as I wanted to have a slight tone of one certain colour I used the colour balance tool. For each image I changed the colours such as: pink, purple and red and black and white. I chose to edit them in this certain way, as I wanted the photographs to have a professional feel with the different colour tones.

How do you feel about your finished work?- including what response you have had from others, and also what sort of exhibition these images could be used for?
I think overall I was pleased with my finalised images as they all represented the topic ‘love’ and with the different colours that I edited and used. I think that the photography’s have a professional finish to them, as they aren’t the typical love photographs that people think of when they associate with the word. Other comments that I have had are ‘creative’, ‘unique’ and also ‘nice design’ so I feel that they have had good response from others. If the photographs were to be used in an exhibition, I think they would be best suited for a fashion/life exhibition as they have shoes included and the style of the photographs are creative.

What skills have you used and developed? Including anything you would have done different.

I think my main skills I have used and developed have been using the different tools in Photoshop and getting to grips on how to use them to create professional looking images. If I were to do the images again I would probably change my photograph idea to taking photos of family/friends together and change it to black and white to represent love to get a whole new and different idea.
